And that ladies & gentleman, is craft
Craft.
Remember it?
That thing that takes ads from good to great?
It's still around.
Not as much these days, but it still can be found.
It's becoming a lost art.
Why?
Budgets being slashed more often than a hot blonde in a shit teen horror movie?
Nobody gives a shit?
Creativity not highest on everyone's list?
Craft not highest on creative's list?
There's loads of reasons.
A good way to think about your craft is:
How many times you've wanted to use Alison Carmichael but then had to use a handwriting font? A photographer rather than stock shot? The list goes on...
But all is not lost, I give you This is Real Art and Coy! photographer Sean de Sparengo.
In a nutshell the brief was to get shots for fashion label Sibling's horror themed clothing. The idea being get various shots of the models wearing the clothes and get them to look scared.
The easy approach would be to get the models to act scared and the take the shots.
The 'craft' way is to build a special blacked out booth to surround the photographers camera. Then commision Adelphoi music to custom make some spooky sounds to give the models a bit of a twitchy anus.
The result - models that are actually scared and shit hot shots.
And that ladies and gentleman, is craft.
You can see the making of here - http://vimeo.com/21370360
Creatives were Sam Renwick, and it comes as no surprise, the Belford was involved. That man is fucking genius.

Interesting Thursday
A few weeks back my copywriter Simon Griffin left the agency to start a new project (can't tell you what it is yet but all will be revealed etc etc). As well as leaving a legacy of great copy and eggy butty smells he left the legacy of Interesting - An all users agency email where we post up anything that we think other people might find, well, interesting. I thought it would be nice to share this, so, from this day forward, every Thursday (memory permitting) i'll put up some interesting things - it might be an ad, it might be some sweet design, it might be a small bird with a hat on. Here's your first lot...
Photography from Gregory Comollo
Alternative Olympic mascot designs from Aaron Miller
And some Nike Air Goldfish

Ruffling Feathers
Bold and balls out ad from Vince McSweeney at McCann Central. Basically an ad placed in The Drum featuring creatives that are on their list to work with. I'm 4th on the list. See more of the story here.
Got to say I think it's a great move from a a new creative director - great way to make your mark and signal your intentions - plus a good way to get potential freelancers, creatives etc to get in touch and say why they should have been on the list.
Hats off and all that.

New Work New York
I've just done a really great project with New York based photographer Kareem Black.
He shoots amazing stuff - as part of his repertoire he had a section on his website called LIFE - which documented...well life - in New York, cool shit, party people, energy, music, drinking, more cool shit, hot girls, cooler shit, backstages, cooler than the cooler shit and basically everything else in between.
We got chatting about this and he said how he was changing the name of LIFE to FEELSGOODLETSGO.COM - and that he need a logo.
So how do you embody all the above? - Music, drinking, parties, cool shit? Well by using a lightening bolt my friends:
And then we talked about getting the website name out there. We came up with this great idea to sticker all of New York - using, as Kareem says 'other people's shit' to promote FGLG. But this just wasn't any old sticker - it needed something different...and boom - if we're gonna use other peoples shit to promote the message then lets make that the idea - and so: Speech bubbles. Easy. Stick it on, and it looks like people are talking about you - we have are very own spokespeople without them knowing.
And what's more - we give the stickers out and get other people to be creative in there placement of the stickers - awesome.
So if you're in New York look out for the stickers - and if you do see one, take a shot and send it.
